Immigration

Chances are that most of your immigration paperwork will be completed before your arrival in Japan. But should you have to visit one of the immigration branches (there are two: one in Shinagawa (the main branch) and a satellite office in Tachikawa) take note of the following:

-The Office hours are from 9:00am-4:00pm. (it's a good idea to get there early)
-The Immigration office closes for a lunch hour between 12:00 and 1:00pm.
-Also be sure to buy any revenue stamps you might need at the convenience stores near the office. These can only be purchased with cash.
-The price of an initial visa is 4,000 Yen. The price of a re-entry permit is 3,000 Yen for a single, and 6,000 Yen for multiple.
- As far as how to get there, please ask one of the Japanese staff, and they will provide you with directions.

Tama City Hall: After getting your visa you will have to visit Tama City Hall in order to register as a resident of Tama.
It is at this point you will receive your Alien Registration Card, or "Gaijin Card," which you need for most things.
The staff at city hall speaks little to no English. It's a good idea to bring a dictionary, and/or Japanese speaking person with you.
Also remember to bring two passport sized photos with you in order to get your card.
(There is a photo booth outside of the large "Le Repas" bakery in the station.)
